Elvish

canonical elvish names

This list has been updated with various canon names, but there are some rules you must understand before proceeding.

I want to say this up front: I am NOT an expert, regardless of how some people think I view myself. Some of these may be incorrect. They are, in some cases, only guesses. These highly speculative cases will be bolded. I do believe that I have done a pretty thorough job of scouring the HoME for available translations and the Etymologies and CoE's dictionary for the unavailable ones. If you have any questions, feel free to reply or to email me.

The pronunciation guide is just that -- a guide. It is meant to give some point of reference for NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS ONLY. Many of the sounds in Elvish do not have English equivalents. My intent was merely to give an English approximation. If English is not your first language, these will, undoubtedly, seem simplistic or incorrect. Also note, no two people pronounce a single word the same. All of my 'th' sounding words are soft, even when I am not speaking Elvish. That is my speech pattern, and it cannot be helped. To me, it is one thing if I have misplaced some emphasis because I was... brain dead or something, then fine, that's an error. But to tell me I have said 'th' instead of 'dh'... that's just a matter of preference.

On another note, in many cases, these translations for names can be derived by more than one route. What I am providing is just one of them, the easier ones usually. I try to use base Sindarin whenever possible, without straying into the complexities of primitive root stems. This is out of courtesy for those reading this list who only want the high-level overview. Not every one is a linguistic scholar, and so probably are not interested in lengthy discussions of the Sindarin actually mutated from the Common Eldarin... No one really cares, they just wish to know what the name means, and that was the task I completed. The person who requested this did not ask me for a detailed derivation or etymology of all these names; she just wanted me to break the names down and offer meanings.

The whole point of this section, really, is to help people come up with names for OCs. That's the ultimate goal. And, in general, these are going to be Sindarin. That is the point of reference I am coming from.

Also, a lot of these names are translations directly from Tolkien, found in the HoME. I will, in the near future, denote the names that come directly from Tolkien.

F Finduilas (fin-DUEL-as) : "leaf-haired"

possibly a transliteration of Findalassë - Q "leaf-haired" (This is my personal thought, because a translation is never given. Túrin refers to Finduilas in the Silm as a "golden tree" -- which would be consistent with this name.)

gwain "new"
dôr "land"
(It is likely that gwain was shortened to gwin in this case, since gwin is the irregular plural form. It is also possible that the dor element is not from taur as in Gildor and Galdor because dôr is a special case word that mutates to ndôr instead of the expected dhôr.)

M Haldir (HAHL-deer) : "hidden one"

hall "hidden"
-dir "adult male"

(Tolkien gives "hidden hero" as a translation for this, but does not supply a derivation.)

F Míriel (MEER-ih-ell) : "jeweled lady"

ndab CE "judge"
-mo Q (archaic naming suffix)

F Nerdanel (NER-dan-ell) : "argumentative Elf"

ner- N "to tell"
dan N "backwards"
el "Elf"

(This is highly presumptive. It is equally likely that ner is meant to be interpreted as the Quenya word for an adult male of any race, which would give Nerdanel's name a distinct male connotation. This would be in line with the passage in Morgoth's Ring that she was taught stone and metal craft by her father -- skills typically only learned by male Elves. I personally lean toward this incomplete translation because of the similarity to one of the given names of Galadriel: Nerwen "man-maiden")
