Inspiration
where the fiction comes from
Most of my fiction is inspired by something, usually a song. Below is a list and explanation of what fiction was inspired by what song/show/book. It's in alphabetical order by title, so I hope you can find my bit about your favourite piece!
anywhere on my own
This is a Legolas/Aragorn story written for my friend Menel. I am a huge fan of Linkin Park, and Lying From You had a single lyric that made me think of the pairing: "The very worst part of you is me". I always thought that, should a relationship happen between the Prince of Greenwood and the King of Men, Legolas would view the weakness of Aragorn as him -- he would blame himself. And, I have always seen Legolas as a wise and selfless character, and I believe he would put Aragorn's, Arwen's and Gondor's happiness/well-being before his: which is the tragedy of Aragorn/Legolas and why I have never written the pairing again.
beside you
There is a song that is floating around the internet by Amy Lee called You. It was never supposed to be released because it was a highly personal song she wrote for her family and her then-boyfriend. I have fallen in love with this song because it speaks to me about how I have felt regarding my own relationships. When I shared the song with a friend, she suggested Erestor write his lover a letter. The letter Erestor wrote to Glorfindel includes many of the sentiments of the song, and I would like to think that it translated well into the fic. It shows how love can make you see yourself so much differently, and it showed how Erestor's view of himself changed with all of Glorfindel's unconditional love.
deliver me
A fellow author, Ilye, is a Maedhros/Fingon fan. After I tackled Fair Shall the End Be, I decided I wanted to try my hand at Simlarillion characters again, and she suggested Maedhros/Fingon. While thinking on this pairing, and hoping for a plot bunny, Sarah Brightman's version of Deliver Me played on my WinAmp. The pieces came together then, that lost, guilty feeling Maedhros had and the sense of Fingon as a savior.
the end of everything
Once again, this was Ilye's doing. She heard Somewhere Only We Know by Keane and sent it to me. Immediately, Elros and Elrond came into my mind. The sense of time lost, of love lost, struck a deep chord with me, and I tried to bring to life the loss Elrond felt when Elros chose a different fate that would part them forever. Twins were chosen specifically since this had been a collabrative effort between myself (Elros/Elrond), Erik LeBeau (who wrote a piece with Eluréd/Elurín), and Ilye (who wrote a piece with Elladan/Elrohir), all of us basing our pieces on sections of the song.
fall forever
This is another story based off a song... as most of my stories are. The song Vindicated spawned this story, though the only place that really comes out in is near the end where Maedhros speaks of how he can now see all in him that Fingon had long before. The title and Fingon's line bother refer to a lyric near the end of the song: Taste this moment, fall forever.
full circle
This one came to me after listening to Madonna's Oh Father. The line: I laid down next to your boots and I prayed / For your anger to end / Oh father, I have sinned. At the time I was obsessed with Maedhros, but this line brought to mind the proud red-haired Elf praying to the Valar to ease Fëanor's anger toward his first born son's sins. The only sin I could think of that Fëanor would never forgive was Maedhros taking his own brother's virginity, for loving Maglor as a lover, not as his brother.
gemimor losian
I have a theory about the older Elves, and Elves who have been reborn. In short, the theory is their memories become diluted, hard for them to grasp. In this piece, and maybe in future pieces should I write more fanfiction, one of Glorfindel's greatest fears is losing the memory of his dead lover. It was inspired by Vertical Horizon's Give You Back.
innocence stripped away
My monster. This series is the result of reading too many fics out there using the term 'BDSM' to cover rape and torture. The complete plot came to me while riding in the car with my husband to a friend's house. Father Figure played on the radio and I immediately saw everything from Erestor's POV in Something Special, Something Sacred - how he only wanted to find that someone he could share himself and his proclivities with that would not judge him and would love him forever. I also wanted show Glorfindel in a more submissive light, show that he was not always the strong, self-assured Elf most people assume him to be. It was to be a tale of two people, very much in love, who do not know where boundaries should be drawn. Two other songs have inspired sections of the initial core of Something Special, Something Sacred: Figured You Out by Nickelback and Slave to Love by Bryan Ferry.
Then the world grew outside of the intitial piece.
I am pagan and I also listen to a lot of Loreena McKennitt music. I had wanted to write something with the feel of her All Souls Night (by feel I mean that wild, barbaric sense I get when I listen to the piece and am swept along to something very old and very powerful) for some time now, but I had no solid idea. Then, a dear friend of mine asked about collaring ceremonies within the BDSM community. The idea then hit: Celeborn and Haldir were already an established Dom/sub relationship in the Innocence Stripped Away universe, and I had never seen a fic about a true collaring ceremony published. So, with the feeling and atmosphere of All Souls Night and Vesta's request of me, The Bridge We Cross was born.
Vesta sent me a song by Alice Cooper called Poison, and I was floored by the sudden story idea that came to me. A post-Something Special, Something Sacred piece where I could explore Glorfindel in a situation away from Erestor. These Chains was set in Mirkwood for the purpose of adding in Thranduil, because I love the barbaric feel the Wood Elves have. If anyone would test Glorfindel's fidelity, it would be him. The song is perfect for the piece, it inspired every aspect of it.
Once I wrote These Chains, the expansion of the world, offering a sense of explanation of Erestor's actions in Something Special, Something Sacred became a driving plot idea. A Reflection and A Wicked Peace were small pieces to show an insight into Erestor's personal torment. They were both based on one Evanescence song, Breathe No More. The duality of the singer in that song was what gave the duality in Erestor.
Finally is my unfinished piece Half the Distance, based mainly on Vertical Horizon's Shackled.
the last
While I held a friendship with Mathia, he asked me to send him the main theme from The Last Unicorn, and when I did, I decided to listen to it. The imagry brought to mind my favorite Sinda, still living in his beloved woods, alone but still beautiful and magical.
love's curtain
The story of Ecthelion has always made my heart wince. And, since I love Erestor as a character, I thought to put the two together. However, the song itself, Meat Loaf's Not a Dry Eye in the House, is not a happy one. It's about the end of a relationship and the heartache surrounding it. I chose to make this heartache even more pronounced by Ecthelion's death; I wanted to show the sorrow and loss Erestor felt when losing his spouse.
a midsummer night's tryst
This story was written in two hours due to the need of the Lindir List on Yahoo. Someone in the fic swap could not complete the fic on time, and so I took it upon myself (as one of the then-moderators for the group) to write a fic for the author it was intended for. I love Shakespeare and chose an amusing scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream to base the story on.
rain
I am a huge Maedhros/Fingon fan. I adore them. When I thought about the chorus to Ace of Base's song Rain, the image of Maedhros standing in the rain, thinking of Fingon, came to my mind. The idea that, every time it rained, he thought of Fingon and the loss of his lover, was strong and I chose to write a small ficlet.
remember me
This story came from an image SayAye had done of Glorfindel and Erestor. I am not sure how the thought developed itself, but I chose to write it in first person and make it short. Just a small view into their routines; how Glorfindel prepared to leave his lover for an extended period of time.
silence of night
While friends with Mathia, he read my gen piece Without a Sound. In it starred, briefly, two male OCs, Cilith and Anion, in Gondolin. Mathia told me how much he adored Cilith specifically, and I offered to write something for him. It was a short PWP, but it is what ultimately paved the way for me to leave fanfiction in favour of my own original fiction.
tears of blood series
The pieces in this series, Darthol i Aur, Gohen, and Trin Genedril (which is currently a WIP) are because Vesta asked me to write about a vampiric Erestor. It then became a challenge for me to see if I could continue the myth I'd created, making vampiric Elves a believable thing in Tolkien's world. I like to believe I did succeed.
these winters
Another songfic. This one is based on Matchbox 20's Bed of Lies. In many fics I have read where infidelity is performed, most authors have the offended party forgive the other almost immediately. I liked the idea in this song of the offended party initially forgiving their lover, but the act eats away at them until they can no longer live in the relationship. In this, Turgon tried to forgive Glorfindel, but he just couldn't. In the end, he did as the singer did: he begged his lover to turn him away because he couldn't do it himself. He loved his lover too much to walk away, but he could not live with the lover anymore.
this moment
I had read very few Haldir/Erestor fics, but the pairing fascinated me. The song, Don't Wanna Miss A Thing by Aerosmith inspired the actual plot to this fic. The idea of being parted from your love, perhaps never seeing them again, and the desire to live in a single moment forever is what makes up the heart of this fic -- and the song. That sense of never wanting to miss a moment in your love's life, because it may be the last.
time until the end of time
This is a series of four trilogies. Each was inspired by music from one artist: Celine Dion, Linkin Park, Meat Loaf, and Evanescence. It was an experiment for me. Color of Love trilogy showed how relationships began; One Step Closer trilogy showed how they were complicated and how the One Ring affects everyone (this was also the only story I have written where three storylines were interwoven); Razor's Edge trilogy offered a sense of closure for the original players in the series; Before the Dawn allowed me to play with characters in a strictly canon sense. These were my first stories, and will always hold a special place within my heart, and they allowed me to explore style, technique and canon.
truce of trust
Another fic inspired by Loreena McKennitt. The Mystic's Dream was the inspiratrion for this, and it is different from all my other fiction because there is no dialogue in the fic. It was to have a surreal, pagan feel to it, and I think I was able to pull that off. The ethereal quality was to be heightened by the lack of dialogue between the two Elves -- just this sense of they both knew what the other wanted and they were willing to give it.
a voice unheard
Though the song this is based on is actually about a father and son, I felt Elton John's The Last Song held enough qualities that could be applied to any pair where one regrets, where one loves, and where one dies though the rift between the two has been bridged. In this one, Elros is at the end of his life span, and Elrond comes to him in his final moments.
the wake of a mistake
This is the sequel to Anywhere On My Own, where I wrap up Legolas' fate. Once again, Linkin Park and their song With You was the basis for this story. It is how Legolas comes to terms with his relationship with Aragorn and Haldir repairs the mistake he made long ago when the Prince first entered the Golden Wood as a young Elf.
winter dreams
A series of twenty-five drabbles/ficlets, one for each day in December leading up to Christmas. Each one was a self-contained piece, some coming from worlds I'd already created, but they were based on a holiday theme or a holiday song. It was my first, and only, advent calender piece, even though people have asked me to do it again. It was one hell of a challenge.
