Elvish
not just a fiction language
J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as the history
of the massive world he created for these stories. From the creation story to the fall of Sauron, the author
created an extensive myth for the people of England. With the release of New Line Cinema's movie trilogy, this
piece has become the center of many fanfiction authors' imagination. The cornerstone of this world is Tolkien's
created languages. The Elves spoke their own language, and that language is as varied as the one we speak.
Dialects, disuse, and banning forced the language to evolve. Sindarin (or Grey-Elven) is the most commonly used
language, having evolved from the Noldorin dialect of Quenya (High-Elven).

sindarin lessons
Many sites claim to have compiled lists of common Elvish terms and phrases. The problem is that most of these
sites display at best an incomplete understanding of the grammar rules, and at worst, have taken some or all of their
words from The Grey Company -- a counterfeit Elvish language that has no bearing on true Sindarin or Quenya. My
feeling has always been that there is no substitute for actually learning the language yourself. To that end, I am
providing these lessons complete with exercises (that I will hand-grade if emailed to me) to help writers improve
their Sindarin skills.

sindarin phrasebook
I have had several authors send me links to phrasebooks asking how accurate they are (usually, they aren't).
As a result, for quite some time, I have offered translation services to any author who requests it. What I have
noticed is that oftentimes, the same translations pop up time and time again. After holding out and holding out on
creating a phrasebook of my own, I finally surrendered to the tide. And so, here it is, by popular request. I
have compiled this list of common words, endearments, and phrases. I have also included a list of "naughty"
phrases perfect for use in slash stories!
